Reading reviews takes too long.
You want to know what people are saying about a restaurant before you try it. But you don’t have time to read forty reviews for one meal, and you can't always trust every review you do read.
What if you could see what people are saying about a restaurant without having to read a pile of individual reviews? What would it look like? How would it influence discovery?
These are the questions that drove us to create Essence™.
When you understand the essence of a place, you know almost instantly whether it’s right for you. So, why should it take hours of research to find your next favorite destination or restaurant?
Essence™ technology cuts through the noise by displaying a combination of the most notable and unique elements of a place in the form of a word cloud. Although an Essence™ may appear short and sweet, it’s actually hundreds or thousands of dimensions deep.
The short answer: We’re geeks who want to see what our invention looks like in action.
The long answer: We’ve developed an algorithm capable of recognizing patterns and extracting insights from huge amounts of reviews and other user-generated content, and we’ve applied bleeding edge Natural Language Processing techniques to turn those patterns into a consumable product that helps people.
We can imagine hundreds of exciting ways to leverage Essence™ technology, but until the right partners come along, we have to focus on making Essence™ smarter. One way to do that is to build a simple application where real people can interact with our algorithm and provide feedback.
As a CEO, I believe it’s important to work with good people and to commit myself to serving them and helping them to grow. As an adventurer, I believe in living a whole-hearted life, to experience as much of the world around me as my time will ultimately allow.
At TravelShark, we strive to make the entropic data of the Internet useful. Having more information is only effective if it empowers us to make better decisions, which in turn should lead to a life better lived. Above all, I believe in solving problems that allow me to leave the world in better shape than I found it. That’s why I work here.
I was born rebellious. If you ask my mother, "Trouble" was my middle name growing up. Today, I still believe we should always question the norm -- and then aspire to transform it in a positive way.
I joined TravelShark because early-stage companies are some of the most challenging and exciting environments in which to breed change. I get to use my creativity, my resourcefulness, and my strategic thinking to help lead a global team of diverse minds. It’s a chance to collaborate on new ideas that can shape the world.
Complexity interests me. From a very young age, I’ve attempted (the key word here is “attempted”) to solve problems that seemed impossible. As a result, I’ve explored a range of fields, from computer science to engineering and physics. Building complex systems from scratch has been a part of my journey, and that’s always been complemented by my belief in numbers and reliance on mathematics.
Working at TravelShark gives me the rare opportunity to work on bleeding edge machine learning research -- and I get to create and deploy algorithms as products to users.
